Abandonment to Divine Providence: Day 26~Appendix 2-3
Thursday Jun 26, 2025
Thursday Jun 26, 2025
Today, we read Appendices 2 and 3 of Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade.
The first part of our reading, Appendix 2 on Perfect Abandonment, emphasizes the readiness that arises from a complete surrender to God's will. We learn that true liberation comes when we cast off the burdens of self-love and ego, finding ourselves filled entirely with the love of God. In moments of strife and difficulty, this abandonment brings a profound peace that surpasses all understanding, allowing us to navigate our worries and fears with serene confidence in God's fatherly goodness. As the heart finds relief in letting go of self, we begin to recognize God as our guiding hand, leading us through life's complexities, and our joy radiates not only within but also outwardly, affecting all who encounter us.
Following this, we read Appendix 3, which provides a straightforward method for practicing the prayer of faith and the simple presence of God. Here, Bossuet outlines methods to cultivate a heart that continuously seeks God, emphasizing the importance of simplicity as a pathway towards divine union. We are instructed on the power of initiating our day with an interior awareness of God’s omnipresence, fostering an interior disposition that keeps our souls aligned with Him throughout our daily tasks. This simplicity encourages us to discard distractions and instead nurture a loving attention toward God, thereby becoming profoundly receptive to His grace and guidance.

Jean-Joseph Surin, an esteemed figure of the Society of Jesus in the 17th century. We begin with a brief biography of Fr. Born in 1600 in Bordeaux, he dedicated himself to God at a young age and faced the harrowing experience of being tormented by evil spirits for over twenty years, an ordeal which deepened his spiritual insights and fervor. This suffering did not hinder his calling; instead, it ignited a divine eloquence in him, allowing him to pierce through the hearts of the faithful with oratory and teachings inspired by deep spiritual truths. As we delve into his rules for achieving self-abandonment, we engage with transformative principles that promise to enrich our spiritual lives.

Tuesday Jun 24, 2025
In this episode, we read Chapter 12 of Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade, marking the conclusion of the original text.
Fr. de Cassade opens the chapter by emphasizing the apparent weakness of divine action in the world, which serves to magnify the merit of those souls who steadfastly adhere to God’s guidance. A striking dichotomy unfolds, wherein the forces of pride appear to dominate the struggle against God's humble followers. Yet, he assures us that humility invariably prevails. Utilizing the powerful metaphor of a colossal statue—comprised of gold, brass, iron, and clay—the chapter reflects on the chaotic clash between good and evil, symbolizing the ongoing spiritual warfare faced by every believer.

Chapter 10 begins with a compelling assertion: the faithful soul derives unprecedented strength from humility and submission to the will of God, a stark contrast to the destructive pride that led Lucifer to fall. He elaborates on how a simple soul, infused with faith, finds beauty and order in God’s design, even amidst chaos and confusion. Abandonment to Divine Providence: Day 21~Ch 7-8 (Book 3)
Saturday Jun 21, 2025
Saturday Jun 21, 2025
Welcome to Day 21 of Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Today, we delve into chapters 7 and 8, exploring themes of trust, surrender, and the divine workings of God.
In Chapter 7, we are encouraged to embrace self-abandonment to God, where justification is found not in our words or actions, but in the divine action itself. Here, Fr. de Caussade illustrates how the soul that places itself firmly upon the rock of God’s will is shielded from trials and tribulations. He emphasizes that when we cease to cling to our own thoughts and the need for self-defense, we open ourselves to the fullness of God’s support. By allowing God’s actions to speak through us, we become vessels of His grace, unswayed by the contradictions and challenges from others. The Latin phrase "dies diei eructat verbum" encapsulates this idea, reminding us that day by day, God's Word is revealed to us, guiding the faithful in their journey.
In Chapter 8, we uncover the truth that God often operates in ways that may seem counterintuitive or even lead to feelings of despair. Here, the author discusses the hiddenness of God’s grace, which can be obscured by our own efforts and perceptions. We learn that the soul must relinquish its reliance on self-initiatives, which often mask the divine reality of God’s love and support. Illustrating this concept, de Caussade compares the faithful soul to a sick man who, despite experiencing discomfort from medicine, ultimately receives healing. This analogy teaches us that our journey of faith can sometimes feel burdensome, yet it is through our acceptance of God’s will amid difficulties that we find true life and strength.

Wednesday Jun 18, 2025
Wednesday Jun 18, 2025
Welcome to Day 18 of Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade's Abandonment to Divine Providence.
Fr. de Caussade begins by illustrating how a soul fully surrendered to God's will often finds itself cloaked in mystery. He notes that as God withdraws light and clarity from our understanding, it is precisely then that He guides us most safely. The author references St. John’s assertion that true knowledge is imparted directly by the Holy Spirit, suggesting that those who are divinely abandoned have a profound intuition of God's will for their lives. This intuitive knowledge does not come from human reasoning but through a deep-seated instinct, propelling the soul toward action with a grace that surpasses mere logic.
Moreover, Fr. de Caussade emphasizes how the soul, after considerable practice in the art of abandonment, can act with a grace that appears spontaneous and unburdened by the constraints of procedure. Just as a skilled musician embodies their craft with effortless precision, the soul learns to rely on divine inspiration for its actions.

Fr. de Caussade eloquently outlines the foundational premise of spiritual life: complete self-giving to God, signifying a state where personal desires and self-interests are relinquished. In the spirit of the prophet’s exhortation, “sacrifice a sacrifice of justice and hope in the Lord,” listeners are invited to recognize that the key to spiritual fulfillment lies in wholly surrendering to God’s pleasure. The podcast reiterates that this abandonment, infused with grace, transforms the soul, allowing it to embrace life’s challenges and blessings alike, untroubled by anxiety or regret.

We delve into the essence of passive submission to God and discover that true sanctification comes through divine action rather than intellectual understanding.
This chapter highlights two pivotal aspects of contentment with God’s will: the conviction that everything has meaning and the acceptance that such meaning may remain obscured, not just now but possibly for the foreseeable future. Fr. de Caussade articulates the notion that we cannot understand the divine designs solely through our own efforts or intellect; instead, we must yield ourselves like pliable material in the hands of the Divine Artisan, allowing His will to shape us.

In today's episode, William Wilson reads Book II Chapter 11 of Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade. We learn how the essence of true sanctification does not lie in searching for elaborate means or methods but rather in surrendering oneself entirely to the divine will of God. Many Christians find themselves anxiously scouring the corners of spirituality for guidance, failing to realize that the true path to sanctity is rooted in our willingness to abandon ourselves fully to the divine action at work in our lives. The discussion centers around the vital idea that divine will is ever-present and continuously available, serving as a wellspring of life and grace that surpasses any means of spiritual nourishment humans might devise.
Listeners are challenged to reconsider their definitions of heroism and sacrifice, as Fr. de Caussade presents that true glory comes from aligning our wills with God's. It isn't merely in grand gestures but in recognizing and embracing God's presence in all circumstances of life that we find heavenly joy.

Friday Jun 13, 2025
Friday Jun 13, 2025
Welcome to Day 13 of Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade.
In Chapter 8, Fr. de Caussade astutely reminds us that true knowledge and spiritual wisdom are not accrued from books or intellectual pursuits alone, but through the lived experiences that God reveals in each moment. While study can offer insight, it is merely the foundation upon which the true understanding of God is built—a wisdom attained through direct encounters with divine grace and truth—“The school of the Holy Spirit.”
In Chapter 9, Fr. Caussade explores the misconception that holiness is found by mimicking past saints; instead, he urges the faithful to embrace God’s ongoing action. The chapter is an invitation to abandon ourselves completely to divine inspiration—an urge to become vessels of God’s love and grace in a contemporary context, just as saints of yesterday were in their time.

Thursday Jun 12, 2025
Thursday Jun 12, 2025
Welcome to Day 12 of Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade. In today’s episode, you will hear Chapters 6 and 7.
In Chapter 6, Fr. de Caussade articulates how divine love is interwoven into the fabric of our existence, much like the sacred mystery of the Eucharist. He prompts us to perceive every encounter, action, and burden as a genuine communion with God's divine will. By drawing a compelling parallel between our earthly experiences and the sacramental grace found in the Eucharist, he challenges us to recognize that every moment holds potential for union with God. This chapter reveals the simplicity of finding holiness in the ordinary, stating that the "holiest life is mysterious in its simplicity and apparent lowliness."
In Chapter 7, Fr. de Caussade addresses the frequent neglect of God's will in our lives, paralleling it to the rejection Christ faced during his earthly ministry. He observes that many overlook the divine action present in their everyday misfortunes and trials, mistakenly believing themselves deserving of a life free of obstacles. He urges listeners to reconsider their perceptions of suffering and disappointment as parts of God's infinite wisdom.

Wednesday Jun 11, 2025
Wednesday Jun 11, 2025
In this episode, we read Chapter 5 of Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade. This chapter paints a picture of the ongoing divine action that continues in our hearts and underscores the profound connection between the Holy Spirit and our personal experiences. Fr. de Caussade introduces us to a metaphor where holy souls represent the "paper" of this divine narrative, while our sufferings and actions serve as the "ink" in which God's ongoing revelation is written.
We are reminded that though we dwell in the "night of faith," a time when the clarity of God's will may elude us, we must embrace the reality that the divine story unfolds through the struggles and triumphs of the saints. The author asserts the perpetuity of Jesus Christ’s presence in our lives, emphasizing that He remains the same—yesterday, today, and forever. This continuity links us to the divine action initiated at His Incarnation and residing within the heart of just souls. Each moment of our lives is filled with His presence, drawing us deeper into the grand tapestry of His love and mercy.

Welcome to Day 10 of Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade.
Chapter 3 offers a rich exploration of the blessings available to us in each moment, provided we approach these moments with faith and love. Fr. de Caussade invites listeners to perceive each moment as a direct manifestation of God's will, suggesting that within it lies everything our hearts could possibly desire. The crux of his message is the idea that true fulfillment cannot be found in worldly possessions or achievements, as they cannot fill the vast capacity of the human heart, which is ultimately designed for the divine. Instead, he encourages a fearless dive into the divine will, which he describes as an unfathomable abyss that can nourish our spirits far beyond our surface-level needs and desires.
Moving to Chapter 4, the theme of mystery continues as Fr. de Caussade reflects on how God unveils Himself in both the regularities of daily life and the grand narratives of scripture. He emphasizes the mysterious nature of God's actions, positing that our understanding is shrouded in obscurity yet invited to a deeper acceptance of faith. The challenges and events of our lives hold profound messages about God's nature, wisdom, and overarching providence.

In today's episode of the Catholic Audiobook in a Month Podcast, hosted by William Wilson, we delve into Day 9 of Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade's profound work, Abandonment to Divine Providence. This episode focuses on Book 2 Chapter 2, which intimately discusses the theme of faith and its ability to illuminate the divine action present even amidst the mundane and the dismal occurrences of life. As a third-order Carmelite, William offers his perspective, particularly emphasizing how Mary's life serves as a quintessential embodiment of faith.
Chapter 2 opens with an exploration of how divine actions can often be veiled by appearances that may seem unseemly to the human senses. The text encourages us to cultivate a discerning eye of faith, one that looks beyond surface-level judgments to uncover the boundless treasures concealed within our life's experiences. Fr. de Caussade invites us to recognize the royal nature of God's will, even when it manifests in the humblest forms of life’s challenges and trials. Welcome to Day 8 of the Catholic Audiobook in a Month Podcast, hosted by William Wilson. In this episode, we read Chapter 1 of the second book of Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Today’s exploration focuses on the theme of faith and its capacity to illuminate our understanding of life's complexities. “Faith is God's interpreter. Without its Enlightenment, we understand nothing of the language of created things.” This sets the tone for a discussion about the transformative power of faith.
Throughout the chapter, we are invited to consider the omnipresence of divine action in our lives. Fr. de Caussade concludes that all creatures, regardless of their form, are held within God's hand. While our physical senses may only capture the actions of created beings, faith reveals the deeper, divine currents that flow through every moment. For those familiar with St. John of the Cross's reflections on the 'dark night of the soul,' William connects the theme of faith to this concept, illustrating how this chapter aids in unraveling the complexities of understanding faith amidst life's trials.

Saturday Jun 07, 2025
Saturday Jun 07, 2025
In today's episode we dive deep into Chapter 9. This chapter explores the profound essence of a pure heart and its significant role as the bedrock of all spiritual states. Fr. de Caussade presents love as the key that unlocks the treasures that await those who seek God earnestly.
Fr. de Caussade emphasizes that to receive the fullness of God's goodness, one must strive to purify their heart, detach from worldly attachments, and surrender wholly to God's divine will. This simple yet profound truth invites listeners to reflect on the true nature of their desires and the paths they pursue. "O blessed pure of heart," the text exclaims, illustrating how a heart free from impurity recognizes God's presence in all aspects of life.
Listeners are invited to discover that amidst life's uncertainty and chaos— when one's own desires may lead them astray— God remains vigilant, redirecting paths for our ultimate benefit. Fr. de Caussade illustrates this divine guidance, managing to evoke the comforting notion that even when we may wish to steer ourselves east, God will lead us west if it is for our good. The overarching message is one of trust— that in surrendering our will, we find peace anchored in divine providence.

Abandonment to Divine Providence: Day 6~Ch 8
Friday Jun 06, 2025
Friday Jun 06, 2025
In today's episode of the Catholic Audiobook in a Month Podcast, host William Wilson guides us through Day 6 of Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade, reading Chapter 8. Wilson begins with an exploration of quietism, a heresy that distorts the faithful's relationship with God. He references an article from Catholic Answers by Todd Agliaro, which critiques the quietist philosophy—rooted in the notion that the desire for action is offensive to God. Instead of active engagement in faith, quietism promotes a passive surrender that neglects the vital role of obedience to one's duties and the active pursuit of holiness.
Chapter 8 outlines that while God may indeed inspire certain actions that go beyond the usual duties, such inspirations should never disrupt the earnest obligations of one's life. Fr. de Caussade's asserts that the pursuit of holiness does not lie in lofty aspirations disconnected from daily engagements. Rather, true sanctity is achieved through faithful execution of the tasks assigned by God—no matter how mundane they may appear. In this light, he posits that every moment dedicated to such duties is worthwhile.

Abandonment to Divine Providence: Day 5~Ch 6-7
Thursday Jun 05, 2025
Thursday Jun 05, 2025
Welcome to Day Five of the Catholic Audiobook in a Month Podcast. Today we dive into Chapters 6 and 7, exploring the relationship between prayer, the mind, and the divine action in our lives.
In Chapter 6, the focus shifts to the mind's role in prayer and the necessity of surrendering its power to divine action. Fr. de Caussade illustrates how the mind, though a valuable instrument, must remain a servant rather than a master. He warns against the snares of confidence in our own abilities, reminding us that reliance on divine action is what truly nourishes and strengthens our souls. The heart must be free of distractions and self-reliance to allow for full communion with God's will. The essence of prayer is clear: whatever God wills at the present moment transcends all other practices, calling for a radical indifference to our self-chosen means. It is through this complete submission to God’s will that we can truly embrace the nourishing presence of His grace in every moment of our lives.
In Chapter 7, Fr. de Caussade emphasizes that only in submission to divine action can the soul find enduring peace. He confronts the reader with a question: if God's chosen gifts do not satisfy, what else can? The chapter reinforces that the fullness present in this moment is enough for our sanctification, urging us to trust in divine wisdom and goodness rather than seeking fulfillment in self-imposed desires. Reliance on external instruments, whether spiritual books or the examples of saints, becomes an obstacle when approached with a spirit of proprietorship. Instead, what brings true peace is the soul's acceptance and usage of these means within the divine order.

Welcome to Day Four of the Catholic Audiobook in a Month Podcast. Today, we explore Chapter Five, focusing on the theme of spiritual reading. Fr. de Caussade emphasizes that spiritual reading must be done in submission to God's order; otherwise, it risks becoming a hollow experience, devoid of genuine spiritual nourishment.
As you listen, you'll recognize the pivotal role that the "duty of the present moment" plays in our spiritual lives. Fr. de Caussade teaches us that our understanding of God's will is vital; it is not merely about accumulating knowledge but about engaging with God through our daily responsibilities and challenges. He reminds us that the most significant transformation occurs when our actions resonate with God's grace, nurturing the new man within us—who is formed through the practice of our present duties, whether they be mundane or extraordinary.

Abandonment to Divine Providence: Day 3~Ch 3-4
Tuesday Jun 03, 2025
Tuesday Jun 03, 2025
Welcome to the third day of Abandonment to Divine Providence, by Father Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Today we will read Chapters 3 and 4. The teachings unfold in two primary dimensions: the active dimension, which requires our diligent adherence to the obligations imposed by God and the Church, and the passive dimension that calls us to embrace the divine flow of each moment.
In Chapter 3, Fr. de Caussade emphasizes that the pursuit of sanctity becomes less daunting when viewed through the lens of this fidelity to God's order. The obstacles we perceive in our spiritual journey often stem from a misunderstanding of what sanctity truly entails. Fidelity to God's commands, he argues, is achievable by all persons, regardless of their strength or circumstances. The active part of sanctity involves fulfilling our specific duties, while the passive component is about embracing what God ordains for us, represented by our circumstances at any given moment. Fr. de Caussade reassures us that God's requirements are not burdensome; rather, they invite us to exercise a simple good will in our lives.
Moving into Chapter 4, we transition toward a deeper exploration of perfection, which does not reside in acquiring knowledge about God's order but rather in our willing submission to it. Perfection is unveiled as the faithful cooperation with God as He seeks to mold our souls to reflect His goodness. The chapter presents a compelling contrast between theoretical knowledge and genuine lived experience of God's will. Theologians may articulate the principles of divine grace, yet it is the humble, faith-filled soul that experiences the transformative work of God most profoundly. Fr. de Caussade asserts that theoretical speculations on sanctification can obscure the simple, life-giving acts of faith we are called to embrace daily.

Abandonment to Divine Providence: Day 2~Ch 1-2
Monday Jun 02, 2025
Monday Jun 02, 2025
Welcome to the second day of Abandonment to Divine Providence, by Father Jean-Pierre de Caussade. Today, chapters one and two guide us through the essence of turning our complete attention to the duties of each moment and exploring the concept of 'shadows'—the duties, attractions, and crosses that God presents in our lives.
In Chapter 1, we delve into the sanctity of the righteous, drawing from the lives of figures from the Old Law and notably, Mary herself. Father de Caussade articulates that their righteousness lay in their unwavering fidelity to God's order. Unlike today's myriad methods of direction and spiritual explanations, these earlier faithful souls focused on the simplicity of fulfilling their present duties. Their spirituality was rooted in a trustful devotion, encapsulated in Mary’s resounding acceptance of God's will—“fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum”—expressing a total abandonment to God's design.
In Chapter 2, we investigate the beautiful analogy of 'shadows'—the duties and tasks that may initially obscure our view of God's action in our lives. The reading reminds us that these shadows are not distractions, but rather the very vehicle through which God operates and invites us to deeper communion with Him. De Caussade defines the present moment's duties as veils that conceal the divine action happening within and around us. Drawing on Mary’s experience, it is suggested that when we transcend the surface of these responsibilities, we can discern the divine at work. Mary stands as a testament to this vision, ever faithful, unbothered by the chaos that surrounds her, finding faith and divine wisdom in the simplest of tasks.
